The only years that the US Mint produced $4 gold pieces were 1879 and 1880. Due to the high value of original “Stella” $4 gold pieces, these are over-struck on US Mint Liberty Head gold $5 Half Eagles (circa 1880-1908).
The over-strike reverse is noted with “100 Cents + Four Dol.” (which equals the host coin’s $5 face value) and “STRUCK ON A US | $5 HALF EAGLE”.
Size: About 22.5mm.
Composition: .900 Gold
Weight: About 8 grams.
