Augustus Saint-Gaudens' original sketch for his iconic Double Eagle design featured a Winged Liberty figure holding a shield. Using as much of the sculpture as possible from an actual coin, the relief was increased and wings and shield were added by Daniel Carr. This concept shows what the original version might have looked like if carried to fruition.
NOTE: Extra thick (piedfort). May not fit in some coin holders

Excellent strike and concept. Mr Carr continues to be on his game. I would love for Mr Carr to strike this design on an actual coin like a Peace or Morgan dollar. The stamping on the reverse slightly distracts from the actual beauty of the design and I would have preferred all of the writing on the rim, but overall still a wonderful coin.

Excellent strike and beautiful concept. Substantial as a piedfort! Hoping that the successor to this piece has slightly softer contoured wings of Liberty on the obverse, to blend with the overall devices in uniformity and relief. Can't wait to purchase the final design!
