"1805" Draped Bust over-strike on Morgan/Peace/commemorative dollar, Circulated

Circulated (antiqued) finish. Over-struck on a Morgan, Peace, or modern commemorative 90% silver dollar. Although flattened, the original edge reeding of the host coin will show on the edge to a varying degree. There is no edge lettering, unlike the original Bust Dollars which had lettering on the edge. Most show some amount of strike doubling. The olive branch on the reverse at lower right is smaller than normal so as to be roughly symmetrical in size with the opposing arrows in the other talon. The Eagle’s tail is also short, allowing space for the added legend along the lower rim: “STRUCK ON A USA SILVER DOLLAR”.

No US silver dollars were minted with dates 1805 to 1835. The 1804 Draped Bust Silver Dollars are renowned for their rarity and are prized by collectors. This over-strike is a “what if ?” piece showing what could have been had the US Mint continued minting dollars with this design after the “1804” issue.

Since these are over-struck on existing coins, there may be faint evidence of the original coin design showing since the over-strike is usually not perfectly aligned with the original strike.
